This bench was designed to coordinate with the Center for Dance design from Fall 2008. The main purpose of the bench is to make the user more aware of their body by providing different relationships with the ground at each “step”. The lowest step is physically and aesthetically the heaviest. With a small surface area and just 15 inches off the ground, the user feels low, too large, and heavy. The middle part is proportioned in a way similar to conventional outdoor benches with a seat at 20 inches, and is meant to make the user feel unaffected. The highest level has thin, tapered legs and a glass seat that rests 26 inches off the ground. This is intended to make the user feel small, bringing them further from the ground plane by having their feet hanging above the floor.
