For the Arquitectum Miami 2009 Competition, my concept was based on the Wet Foot, Dry Foot immigration policy, which states that Cuban immigrants will be eligible for permanent residency if they make it to American soil, but if captured on water must return to Cuba. To imitate the hardship of the journey for many immigrants who came to Miami, the 100-meter-long site is entered from the end at sea. By way of a long pier starting at the waterline and going underneath the museum, visitors enter into the back end of the museum through the ‘Wet Foot’ Exhibits and make their way back toward the beach. The journey ends in the ‘Dry Foot Galleries’, a second building firmly rooted on the beach. The museum in its form, circulation and content evokes the emotions of a long, dangerous journey to gain protection on American soil.
