Providence Public Library
Three Generations of Architecture
RISD Spring 2010
150 Empire Street, Providence, RI

Providence Public Library currently exists as two main buildings with drastically different styles. The original building was built in 1894 and expanded in 1953 with a large addition along Empire Street. Introduction of a third architectural generation reconciles the two very different styles of architecture and invigorate the tired exterior, drawing people in to the library. A large atrium allows natural light to penetrate to the entry level. The glass roof also allows for optimal public programming and reading spaces because of the natural light. Each floor in the new program has a separate function reflecting the level of public use and type of activity. The addition of a childcare center is a new source of revenue for the library and activates the library’s existing childrens' collection. A cafe and bookstore also invite the daily use of the library by bringing in a lunch crowd. Integrating new architecture and new uses for the library will help to revive this under-used landmark in downtown Providence.
