The Center for Dance focuses on the importance of gravity to dancers. Making their lifts and leaps seem effortless, dancers must use their strength against the force of gravity in order to perform. The theme of gravity is portrayed in the architecture by contrasting material opacity and perceived weight, contrasting spatial qualities and by a strong intersection of vertical volumes and horizontal planes. The performance space is a 3-story void that accommodates aerial dance. In opposition to the void is a massive wedge-shaped concrete wall piercing each floor, with different functions built in to it on each level. The program incorporates different functions for each floor that follow a strict hierarchy, culminating in the transparent, “floating” dance studios and performance space in the void.
